Buying a car in Jordan in 2025? Here's what's changed

Thinking about buying a car? Now might be the right time to take action!

The Jordanian government has approved a new tax system that significantly lowers the total taxes on imported cars, including gasoline, hybrid, and electric vehicles. These changes, which came into effect at the end of June 2025, are part of a broader reform to support citizens, lower living costs, and make more vehicle options available.

Here's what's changed, why it matters, and what it means for you if you're planning to buy a car this year.

What’s changing for car buyers in Jordan in 2025

In Jordan, taxes on imported cars differ by type.

  • Gasoline and hybrid cars are subject to total taxes, which include customs duties and sales tax. These total taxes have been reduced.
  • Electric vehicles (EVs) are mainly subject to a special tax. Previously, this tax followed a system that was set to increase over time. Under the new structure, it's now fixed at a lower, flat rate.

Here's how the updated taxes compare:

Vehicle typePrevious taxesNew taxes
Gasoline cars71% total taxes51% total taxes
Hybrid cars60% total taxes39% total taxes

What's changing in November 2025

Starting November 1, 2025, tighter import regulations will come into effect to improve the quality and safety of imported cars. These changes apply to all vehicle types, including gasoline, hybrid, and electric models.

Here's what you should know:

  • Recognised standards: All imported passenger cars must meet one of the approved technical regulations from Europe, the United States, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), or Saudi Arabia.
  • Newer EVs only: EVs that are more than 3 years old, including the year of customs clearance, will no longer be eligible for import. This ensures access to newer, more reliable models.
  • No more salvage cars: Vehicles that have been damaged by fire or flooding, or are considered unrepairable in their country of origin, will no longer be allowed for import. This helps protect buyers from unsafe or poor-quality cars.

Why the Jordanian government is making these changes

This reform is part of a wider plan to improve affordability, safety, and sustainability across Jordan's vehicle market. Here's what the government aims to achieve:

  • Make cars more affordable by lowering the cost of buying and owning a vehicle
  • Improve road safety by enforcing higher import standards and banning damaged vehicles
  • Protect consumers by ensuring access to better-quality and more reliable cars
  • Promote greener transport by encouraging the shift to hybrid and electric vehicles that use less fuel and reduce air pollution

How these changes affect you as a car buyer

These changes bring real benefits for anyone thinking about buying a car this year.

  • Lower prices: With reduced taxes, the cost of new and imported used cars is now more manageable, making car ownership more achievable.
  • More options: As importers respond to the changes, you may start seeing a wider variety of models in the market, giving you more choices.
  • Better quality and safety: The upcoming import regulations aim to raise the standard of cars brought into Jordan, so you can feel more confident about what you're buying.
  • A stronger case for EVs: If you've been thinking about switching to an EV, the new 27% flat special tax makes it a more affordable option.
